    June Lake at dusk.

    The inimitable Mono Lake. #latergram

Our batteries have been recharged and we're growing tired of the casino parking lot. Tomorrow we're headed to Lake Tahoe for a few final days in the Sierras. Can't wait.

We're currently camping in a casino parking lot in Reno, NV, recharging our batteries (both figuratively and literally) and trying not to dwell too much on the beautiful places we've just left behind, instead focussing on work, catching up on email, and planning the next leg of our travels. So until then, a #latergram or two from one our favorite parts of the country.

Yesterday we spent the afternoon in our swimsuits at June Lake Beach. We didn't find shells, we didn't find shark teeth, we didn't catch waves. Heck, the water was too cold for me to even get in past my feet. I am certain, however, that the next time someone asks us what our favorite beach has been, I will find myself thinking back to this crystal clear turquoise water & this unbelievably beautiful alpine view.

Love this one. Says "Est. 1885" on the sign outside. Pretty sure they haven't replaced the roof since then. ;) #postofficeportrait #postofficeproject

An old wooden livestock squeeze chute in Mono Basin. Squeeze chutes are used to constrain livestock while they are being examined, branded, or given treatment by a veterinarian. I suspect this one hasn't been used in quite some time.

Went out driving yesterday & found ourselves wandering down a random road with no real destination in mind. Wound up keeping pace with these guys for a while. 🐴 What an incredible memory this one will be! Unplanned adventures are often the best kind of adventures.

Some days we just start driving, picking the most unlikely of roads and seeing where they lead, making a similar decision at each fork. Sometimes the roads go nowhere, but more often they lead us to see things we'd never see otherwise. Yesterday we drove about 60 miles of back roads, logging roads, impromptu ranch roads, and for the most part didn't see much. Until we came upon this pack of wild horses (or open range horses, whatever). We followed them for a couple miles, and then kept pace alongside as they raced through the sage & creosote bushes, before finally overtaking them. It was pretty incredible.

My fashionable son exploring the obsidian plug of Panum ...

Hiked to the top of Panum Crater. From the top of this pumice ring & obsidian plug dome you can see the entire Mono Basin. It's an extremely new crater - they believe it to be 600-700 years old. The crater itself was left behind when some hot lava met with water just below the surface & caused steam & an eruption. Then a bunch of obsidian cinders shot up out of the core & fell below to form the plug. Or something like that. #monolake #panumcrater
